New research papers from beòcarta

Two new research papers from beòcarta: gluconic acid synthesis by Aspergillus oryzae (usually known as an industrial source of itaconic acid and lovastatin) and glucose use by Streptomyces clavuligerus. Two manuscripts deriving from work by beòcarta’s Ph.D. student, Catherine Dowdells, have been submitted for publication. These new findings emerged from work undertaken during the EU-funded project ANTICO in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde and the National Institute of Chemistry, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Presentation at the University of Glasgow's Sustainable Energy Forum

David Mousdale gave a presentation on biofuels at the University of Glasgow’s Sustainable Energy Forum on 19th April 2010. In an event dominated by wind turbine engineering, this talk tackled head-on the nagging question of why cellulosic ethanol production had stalled. Too many rival technologies? Insufficient investor capital (or confidence)? Will events pick up when the Great Crash of 2007-2008 finally staggers into history?

"Biofuels: Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Sustainable Development" Second Edition

A “second edition” of Biofuels: Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Sustainable Development. Only two years after its first publication, a major rewrite is now at the final proof stage. Incorporating a detailed analysis of the Indirect Land Use issue that threatens the whole future of biofuels production, the effects of the slump of 2007-2008, and with many updates to the quantitative arguments, Introduction to Biofuels builds on its predecessor’s treatment of the science, technology, engineering, economics, history and environmental impacts of biofuels production. Due out in late 2010, the publisher is again CRC Press (part of the Taylor & Francis Group).
