Fermentation Microbiology and Biotechnology
Since 1985, beòcarta has contributed chapters to books and articles to scientific journals. The most important of these written sources is the multi-authored monograph Fermentation Microbiology and Biotechnology (ISBN 0-8493-5334-3), presently in its second edition (but scheduled to reach its third in late 2010).
Published by the Taylor & Francis Group (Boca Raton, Florida) and edited by Mansi El-Mansi, Ph.D., the chapter “Metabolic Analysis and Optimization of Microbial and Animal Cell Bioprocesses” covers topics as diverse as:
- Secondary products (including clavulanic acid and antibiotics)
- Industrial enzymes
- Animal cell cultures and biopharmaceuticals
The Chapter explores how commercial bioprocesses can be optimized for yield and performance in the era of metabolomics and other “omics” technologies. Backed up by computer-derived diagrams and metabolic “maps”, the discussion challenges traditional black-box approaches to the development of strains, cell lines, and process engineering.
Can a biologist fix a radio? Can genetic knowledge alone ever be enough?
